The 5 Different Types of Ghosts (with Pictures)

August 8, 2026

Did you know that there are many different types of ghosts? Most people don’t. Even in the phantom world there is no one size fits all. Paranormal researchers have sorted hauntings into categories for over a century, and after two decades of leading ghost tours through Old Louisville, we have had reports of nearly every one of them. Below are the five types of ghosts, what makes each one different, and where people say they have encountered them in Louisville.

The Interactive Personality Ghost

The Interactive Personality Ghost is the most commonly reported type in hauntings. These spirits usually appear much as they did in life, often wearing the clothing of their era, and they seem aware of the living. They can walk, speak, and occasionally respond to people directly. Paranormal researchers believe these are the spirits of people with unfinished business or a strong attachment to a place.

Old Louisville is famous for reports of this type. With hundreds of Victorian mansions dating to the 1880s and 1890s, the neighborhood has more than its share of stories about figures in period dress who appear on staircases and in windows, then vanish.

The Funnel Ghost

Funnel Ghosts are typically spotted in old buildings and historic places, most often as a swirling column of light or a spiral shape in photographs. Investigators associate them with cold spots, and many people report an unsettled feeling after finding one in a photo they took. Some researchers believe funnel ghosts are loved ones returning to a place that mattered to them.

The Mist, Fog, or Wisp Ghost

Like funnel ghosts, these phantoms are usually accompanied by a sudden chill in the spot they are haunting. A mist ghost appears as a patch of fog or haze with no natural source, indoors or out, and is most often reported in the evening or at night. Photographers love them and skeptics love debunking them, which is half the fun. On our evening tours, autumn conditions in Old Louisville produce plenty of natural mist, so we always tell guests: rule out your own breath first, then start asking questions.

The Poltergeist

The most famous type of ghost, and thankfully the rarest. Poltergeist translates from German as “noisy ghost,” and this one is known for moving objects, slamming doors, and occasionally destructive or even dangerous behavior. Unlike an interactive personality ghost, a poltergeist rarely shows itself. You do not see it. You see what it does.

Ghost Orbs

Orbs are the most photographed specters of all. They typically appear as blue, white, or shiny spheres, and true orbs almost always move in a deliberate weaving or crisscross pattern. Paranormal researchers believe orbs may be souls traveling from one place to another, appearing as pure energy rather than human form. Dust, moisture, and insects account for many orb photos, which is why investigators pay attention to orbs that change direction or appear in multiple frames.

Want to Meet One in Person?

Reading about ghosts is one thing. Standing in front of the Witches’ Tree at dusk while a guide tells you what happened there is another. Our Louisville ghost tours run year-round through Old Louisville, one of the most haunted neighborhoods in America, led by guides who know these stories because we collected them ourselves. If you want to go deeper, our paranormal investigation tour with Angelique Stacy puts real investigation equipment in your hands.

The ghosts are here. Come find out which type finds you.
