Louisville Ghost Tours: Attractions and Stops
For more than 20 years, the Louisville Ghost Tours have welcomed hundreds of thousands of guests to Old Louisville, the neighborhood widely called the most haunted in America. This is the original Old Louisville Ghost Tour, the one that inspired so many others that followed. We are 100% locally owned and operated, and all of our guides are locals with direct connections to the neighborhoods they represent.
Unlike ghost tour chains that recycle stories from the public domain, the majority of our ghost stories are original, documented, and drawn from the books of founder David Dominé. Many of the tales now associated with haunted Old Louisville simply were not being told until we uncovered them, researched the history behind them, and brought them to life in print and on tours. We take protecting that original work seriously. When we believed a national ghost tour chain had infringed on our intellectual property and engaged in unfair competition, we took the matter to federal court to defend the material we spent decades developing.
Louisville Ghost Tours run seven nights a week, year-round, at 6:00 pm, 7:30 pm, and 9:15 pm, with limited times in the off-season and private tours by appointment. Entirely outdoors, the tour lasts approximately two hours and covers about 1.5 miles at a leisurely, stop-and-start pace through the heart of Old Louisville. The Original Old Louisville Walking Tour takes you beneath towering trees, through secluded walking courts, and past some of the grandest residences in one of America’s largest historic preservation districts. Old Louisville Walking Courts And Preservation
One of Old Louisville’s most distinctive features is its walking courts, pedestrian-only residential enclaves where residences face one another across landscaped green space instead of a street. The William Wathen House pictured here stands on one of these secluded courts.
Originating during the neighborhood’s 19th-century building boom, the courts offered gracious urban living away from carriage traffic, with service access generally relegated to rear alleys. Their walkways also provided the perfect setting for the Victorian “evening constitutional,” a leisurely stroll that allowed neighbors to see, be seen, and exchange the latest gossip.
Today, these beautifully preserved courts offer a rare glimpse of Victorian neighborhood life. Our Old Louisville tours explore these hidden pedestrian enclaves. At night, when the gas-lit street lamps glow, they are especially charming.
Old Louisville History and Architecture
Old Louisville is often described as an open-air museum of turn-of-the-century architecture, with roughly 1,400 structures spread across more than 40 square blocks. Few neighborhoods offer such an extraordinary concentration and variety of late-19th- and early-20th-century design.
On our Old Louisville tours, you will encounter Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, Italianate, Renaissance Revival, Châteauesque, Beaux-Arts, and Eclectic architecture, often standing side by side. Elaborate stonework, turrets, towers, stained glass, sweeping porches, and fanciful rooflines reveal an era when prosperous Louisvillians wanted their homes to make a statement.
